The Philadelphia 76ers are in freefall, and Monday night’s 106-89 loss to the Miami Heat only deepened their woes. Blowing an 18-point lead in the second quarter, the Sixers are now tied for the worst record in the NBA, a staggering 2-11. As frustration mounted, an hour-long locker room meeting followed the game, where Joel Embiid’s comments about his former teammate, Jimmy Butler, revealed more than just admiration—it showcased the longing for what could have been. Would the Sixers be in a different place had they kept Butler? Let's break down the aftermath of this heartbreaking loss.

Embiid reflects on lost opportunities as Sixers struggle without Butler

The Miami Heat dominated the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night with a 106-89 victory, marking the Sixers’ fourth consecutive loss and dropping them to a dismal 2-11 record on the season tied with the Washington Wizards for the worst in the NBA. The disappointing defeat sparked a tense, hour-long team meeting in the locker room post-game.

When the media finally entered, the spotlight turned to Joel Embiid, who had just wrapped up his second game of the season, contributing only 11 points and eight rebounds in the loss. Asked about his former teammate Jimmy Butler, who had an impressive 30 points on just 12 field goal attempts, Embiid didn’t hold back in his praise.

"Jimmy's Jimmy," Embiid said. "He does everything. Scoring, passing the ball. Commanding while being on the floor. Both sides of the floor. One of the best players in the league. Probably top five. Probably the best actually. Best player in the league. He's hard. He's hard to guard. You know, it takes the whole team." (via: si.com)

Embiid's words clearly reflect a sense of longing for what could have been, as the Sixers have yet to recover from Butler’s departure. In his single season with Philadelphia, Butler helped take the team within one shot of the Eastern Conference Finals. Since then, the Sixers have failed to get any closer to postseason glory, while Butler has guided the Heat to three Eastern Conference Finals and two NBA Finals.

While it's uncertain whether Butler could solve all of Philly’s current struggles especially considering his preference for load management, it's hard to ignore the glaring what-if. After all, who wouldn’t want the best player in the league on their roster?
