The
Minnesota Timberwolves are in the midst of a significant slump, and star player
Anthony Edwards has had enough. Following their fourth consecutive defeat, a 115-104 loss to the Sacramento Kings, Edwards openly called out his team, expressing frustration with their performance and lack of toughness.
The Timberwolves were in control for much of the game, leading by 12 points with just over seven minutes remaining. However, the Kings mounted a massive comeback, outscoring Minnesota 29-6 in the final stretch. Sacramento's Malik Monk, De'Aaron Fox, and Domantas Sabonis were dominant, combining for 27 points in the fourth quarter. In contrast, the Timberwolves could only muster 18 points during the same period, sealing their fate with a heartbreaking loss.
"What you wanna know, why we’re trash?" Edwards asked reporters after the game, calling attention to the team's ongoing issues. The two-time All-Star was blunt about the Timberwolves' struggles, specifically pointing to the team’s lack of defensive effort.
"We’ve been trying to figure this out for the whole year, man," Edwards said.
"We thought defense was our identity, and it’s not looking like it at all. Our identity right now … we’re soft as hell, like as a team, internally."

Edwards' frustration is understandable, considering the Timberwolves’ defensive drop-off. Last season, the team led the NBA in defensive rating (108.4) and finished with a strong 56-26 record, securing third place in the Western Conference. This season, however, the Timberwolves rank 12th in defensive rating (112.1) and sit at 12th in the Western Conference, barely above the .500 mark with an 8-10 record.
The Timberwolves’ inability to close out games has been a recurring theme in their recent slide, and Edwards believes the team's mental and physical toughness is a major issue. He described their defensive communication as lacking, likening it to the disorganized nature of a children's basketball team.
"It’s just like we’re playing with a bunch of little kids," Edwards said.
"Everybody, the whole team, we just can’t talk to each other, and we’ve got to figure it out because we can’t go down this road."Edwards didn’t hold back when asked about potential solutions, pointing to the need for the team to follow head coach Chris Finch’s game plans.
"Do what the f**k coach (Chris Finch) tells (them) to do," Edwards said.
"We’ve been tuning him out, doing something totally different." Despite the team’s struggles, Finch has proven himself as a capable coach, leading the Timberwolves to their first conference finals appearance since 2004 last season. Edwards' comments reflect growing frustration with the lack of discipline within the locker room.
The Timberwolves will need to address these issues quickly if they hope to turn their season around. Their next opportunity to improve comes on Friday when they host the LA Clippers (12-8). As Edwards put it, the team cannot afford to continue down this path of underperformance and missed opportunities.

The Timberwolves’ poor defensive effort, lack of communication, and struggles with following coaching strategies are becoming significant concerns. If they are to return to their former glory, the team will need to quickly regroup and rediscover the identity that made them one of the NBA’s top defensive teams last season.
