Nuggets vs. Mavericks: Nikola Jokic’s availability is in doubt ahead of high-stakes game

The Denver Nuggets are facing uncertainty as star player Nikola J... Read More
The Denver Nuggets have experienced a rollercoaster start to the 2023-24 NBA season, with their fortunes largely tied to the availability of their three-time MVP, Nikola Jokic. While the Serbian center has been a dominant force when on the court, his recent absence has cast a shadow over the team's performance.

Nikola Jokic playing tonight?

Jokic, who participated in the Nuggets' first 10 games, missed their recent three-game road trip for personal reasons. While the franchise refrained from elaborating on the nature of his absence, head coach Michael Malone confirmed that Jokic had remained in Denver. Nuggets insider Katy Winge alleviated fans’ concerns by stating on X (formerly Twitter) that Jokic and his family were doing well and there was no cause for alarm.

As Denver prepares for a critical NBA Cup clash against the Dallas Mavericks, uncertainty surrounds Jokic’s availability. Reports indicate that he did not join the team for Thursday’s practice, and Malone had no definitive update. "No idea about Friday," Malone said about Jokic on Tuesday. "There's no news out of Denver, so we'll revisit that when we get home. Kind of see where everything's going with his family."

Despite Jokic staying in Denver during his absence, his return to the lineup is not guaranteed for Friday’s game. Malone acknowledged that while communication has been maintained, the balance between staying informed and respecting personal boundaries remains crucial. “I care about (Jokic’s wife) Natalija and their family. … So I’m constantly calling and texting and communicating with all of our guys to see how they’re doing,” Malone shared, underscoring the importance of support during challenging times.

The Nuggets, currently 8-5, managed a mixed 1-2 record on their recent road trip without Jokic. Their victory against Memphis in an NBA Cup game added some momentum, improving their group stage standing to 1-1. However, the team clearly thrives under Jokic’s leadership, and his potential return could significantly impact their performance against the Mavericks.

As the Nuggets navigate a tight schedule, including a back-to-back game against the Lakers, the decision regarding Jokic’s participation will not only influence Friday’s matchup but also set the tone for the team’s immediate future. Fans eagerly await updates, hoping for the return of their star to steer Denver back to consistent success.
