Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich sidelined indefinitely due to health concerns

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is reportedly suffering from some health issues and is expected to be out indefinitely. In his absence, assistant coach Mitch Johnson will step in as the interim head coach. The team revealed that 75-year-old Popovich would be unable to coach the game, with Johnson stepping in to take on head coaching responsibilities.ESPN's Shams Charania took to X to share the news of Popovich’s health issue, “San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich suffered a health issue before Saturday’s game and assistant Mitch Johnson is expected to be the interim head coach for indefinite period, including Monday vs. Clippers and Wednesday vs. Rockets, sources tell ESPN,” he wrote on the platform.Johnson who is set to fill the shoes of Popovich told the press that he was "just not feeling well." Johnson also took charge of the Spurs on Monday night against the Los Angeles Clippers in Southern California, where he spoke about Popovich's absence before the game. "I just want to start off by saying that Pop's impact on our organization from the players that he's coached and the staff that's worked with him in the community of San Antonio," Johnson said (via ESPN).He went on to add, "It's hard to articulate or put into words, and if I tried it would not do it justice. He's been tremendous for me personally, and right now his health is the No. 1 priority. We support him in that 100% and I talked to him last night. He's in good spirits. He's OK, and we can't wait to have him back."Popovich has been the longest-serving head coach in the league and is currently in his 29th season with the Spurs. Additionally, he has several astonishing accolades to his name including the record for the most wins in NBA history, with a stunning 1,391 career victories. Further, he has an additional 170 playoff wins to his credit. Over his career, he has also led five teams to win NBA championships.
