The trades in NBA are no less than high-stakes chess moves, and with the 2026 deadline looming, the Golden State Warriors are stuck with an important decision to make. While the dream of pairing Stephen Curry with Giannis Antetokounmpo has moved from a distant fantasy to an attainable possibility, the cost of achieving it lies in sacrificing one of the core members, potentially someone who has helped the Warriors win 4-NBA rings. With Jimmy Butler sidelined and potentially off the table, the next player who could potentially trade to make space for the $54 million Giannis Antetokounmpo could be Golden State’s veteran defender, Draymond Green.

Draymond to potentially become a catalyst in Warriors' dream acquisition of Giannis

According to NBA insider Marc Stein via TheSteinLine, the Warriors are now unlikely to include Jimmy Butler’s massive contract in a trade for the Greek Freak following Butler’s season-ending ACL tear on January 19.Stein wrote, “Another Antetokounmpo development that has emerged over the past 24 hours: We've heard further strong indications that the Warriors' pursuit of Antetokounmpo is unlikely to involve Jimmy Butler's contract after Butler sustained a season-ending knee tear on Jan. 19. So what does that mean for lifelong Warrior Draymond Green? It has long been assumed that a credible Golden State offer would have to include Green or Butler for salary-matching purposes.
The implications are clear: if Butler, with his $54.1 million salary, is off the table, the only major anchor to match Giannis' matching $54.1 million figure is Draymond Green, who’s set to earn $25.8 million this season.

Will this be the end of an era, or remains a necessary growth decision?

Most often, the NBA trades of this level aren't just about talent and bonds but are just cold, hard math. With Golden State aiming for another NBA championship ring while utilizing Stephen Curry’s talent on the court properly, they need to make some razor-sharp decisions. Jimmy Butler’s trade could have been seen as a clean path, but the ACL injury would act as a roadblock. That leaves Draymond Green, who’s entering the third year of his $100 million extension, in a trade package with the young star Jonathan Kuminga and multiple first-round picks. As Stein describes it, Golden State would need to be truly prepared to move on from a player who has spent 14 seasons in the Bay since getting drafted by them in 2012 as the #35 overall pick. Draymond Green remains a crucial element of Steve Kerr’s rotation and is currently averaging 8.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.3 assists with a field shooting efficiency of 41.3%. this season, while the Warriors currently sit at 8th in the West (27–23). If Bucks decide to move their superstar before Thursday’s trade deadline, the Warriors have to sacrifice a lot to acquire the 2-time NBA MVP.
