KOLKATA: His luncheon break with teammate Abhijit Kale, at the Airport Hotel here on Tuesday afternoon, was interrupted rather prematurely as a couple of scribes walked into the coffee shop in a desperate bid to get closer to new India cap. Avishkar Salvi is hardly complaining though.
And while it remains to be seen what shape the Mumbai seamer’s career takes, one thing is for sure — Salvi already seems to have taken stardom in his stride. "Representing India is a special moment in my life. I’ve savoured every moment of it," he said.

And despite all the hype and hoopla surrounding him, the right-arm medium-fast bowler appeared to be quite down-to-earth. "I just need to be playing well to justify my selection. I was very positive in mind all throughout."

When told that John Wright had praised, especially in view of India’s tour of Australia later this year, Salvi said: "It’s good to know that, but right now I am not really worried about the Austrlia tour. My immediate concern is my fitness and I’d like to make good use of this long lay-off. In fact I’m looking forward to the Ranji Trophy semifinal that gets under way in a couple of days."

Given Javagal Srinath’s impending retirement what can be his future role? "If someone has to go, he will have to. And if I happen to be the one who will have to fill the vacant slot, then I might as well do that. But to make sure that I fit into Sri’s shoes, I ought to do all the hard work."

Admitting that Glenn McGrath was his idol, Salvi added that it was not really a conscious move to bowl like him. He was all praise for skipper Sourav Ganguly. "He backs a youngster to the hilt and always makes sure that a newcomer feels comfortable."

He also said that having Ashok Malhotra around as coach in his debut match helped a lot. Salvi was used to Malhotra’s ways, having recently toured the West Indies with the India ‘A’ team under his coaching.
