PANAJI: Two pillars of Indian cricket,
Kiran More and
Amol Muzumdar, said
Indian cricket had a bright future provided they were careful about a few critical things.
Speaking at a seminar of the Sports Journalists Federation of India at Mandovi hotel, More said, "The Fab Five may be fading but the future is bright. One didn't get a replacement for the 1970s golden quartet of spinners. Similarly we may not get the replicas of the Fab Five all at once but still there will be a future with one player or the other like a Sehwag coming on the scene," said More.
"Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and VVS Laxman bestrode Indian cricket in the past decade and more.
Yet the others are coming up. We should not worry."
More said the ten Indian batsmen of today all had different swings and styles, you can't get them to conform to one. England is coming to India for learning the game and we are moving to their system.
Said Amol: "It's wrong. Formerly they used to give us the MCC Coaching Book, today they are sending out T20 DVDs. The game has changed."
Amol illustrated by saying that the crux of Sachin's success was that coach Ramakant Achrekar never interfered with Sachin's grip or technique.
"The top of the bat handle brushed his left hand and created a black mark because of friction. No one told Sachin to avoid that and the rest is history."
Both More and Amol talked about the zonal selection system and its flaws. More gave plenty of insights into the selection process, pointing out how he and his lot gave India at least 25 top players because they gave the talent the boost at the right time.
Amol said after 16 years with Mumbai he was seeing how much talent there is outside like in Assam who he leads in the Ranji Plate event."Pacer Abu Nachim who has raw pace is at least India A material."
Several Goa cricketing personalities were present including Dayanad Narvekar, the GCA president, former official Prashant Joshi, former Goa stars Namdev Phadte and Hemant Angle.
On Thursday, former Indian hockey captain Olympian Viren Rasquinha (CEO, Olympic Gold Quest), will be speak on Olympic issues along with boxing official Kishen Narsi.
