January 17: Fast bowlers are known to be colourful characters. They love to knock batsmen over and always back themselves with the bat. Former Australian fast bowler Rodney Hogg was no exception. He could really work up a fair bit of pace and loved to bat. 'Hoggy' as he is popularly known, also enjoyed a joke or two especially when it came at his own expense.
The blond fast bowler narrated a few funny incidents from his career to Cricket Australia's corporate guests during lunch time here. In 1984-85, Australia had came back from the West Indies after playing five Test matches, during which they encountered plenty of short-pitched bowling. So when it was the turn of the Caribbeans to tour Australia later in the year, Hogg was determined to use the first Test in Perth Test to hone his batting skills. Someone told him the idea was to go back and across. Hogg remembered the advice alright, but when he went in Australia were six wickets down for 80-odd. As a West Indies bowler charged in, Hogg forgot all about going back and across and moved away from his stumps. Predictably, he was bowled.
"The first thing I did after getting back to the dressing room was to call my wife and ask her whether she had recorded my brief innings. I wanted to make sure that my kids didn't grow up with the impression that I was a coward!"
Dada chips in and Jumbo’s coolSourav Ganguly often keeps forgetting that he is no longer the captain and starts directing the players around the field, especially when things are going India's way. With the Aussies reeling at 43 for four and the Indians bubbling, Sourav was seen waving at fielders either to move in or fall back. Kumble, however, had no problems with that.
