VISAKHAPATNAM, Sept. 26: What separates the successful from the not-so-successful is the hunger and passion for the goal. The fire in the belly, which drives them towards fulfilment of their dream.

Over the centuries, the economically and socially disadvantaged have used sports as a vehicle to carve out a name for themselves.
Hoping to join the illustrious list of such sportspersons is Mumbai all-rounder Ramesh Powar.

Though still in the nascent stage of his career, Powar has an innate hunger for success. "I know what it means to struggle in life. I have seen my father, though he had a good job, slog it out day in and day out. My sister (Geetha) and brother (Kiran, who plays for Assam) too have made many a sacrifice," Powar told TNN at the ACA-VDCA stadium here on Friday.

"We could not really afford to take up cricket as a career, but still my family backed me to the hilt," Powar added.

For someone who grew up playing with the softball and cross bat shots, Powar has made rapid strides as a utility man. He has been a key performer for Mumbai over the years. "I am happy with the progress I have made thus far. But the best is still ahead," the 25-year-old added. The spark in the eyes says he means business.

"This is a big game for me. Such matches will give me an opportunity to impress the selectors. A couple of good outings and I should be in the Indian team," a confident Powar added.

On the Irani Cup match, he said: "Personally I had a good match. But it was disappointing to lose from a position of strength. I should have been more consistent with my bowling in the second innings. But hats off to Rahul Dravid. He was the key to Rest of India''s win."

A bowler who is very handy with the bat, Powar has done well in the lower order. "I have no preference while batting. I play according to the team''s requirements. Mumbai has a very strong batting and it is not possible to bat up in the order. I always believed in doing my best to help the team win."

Like all Mumbaikars, Powar looks up to Sachin Tendulkar. "Sachin''s temperament is remarkable. It is something which I also hope to achieve in the days to come."

Powar rates South African spinner Pat Symcox very highly. "He had tremendous control and had a lovely flighted delivery. Muralitharan is also a very good bowler.

"I learnt a lot from Prasanna, Venkataraghavan, Bishan Singh Bedi and others during my stint at the National Coaching Academy. The academy is a very good thing to happen. It helps the youngsters a lot in getting exposed to good coaches and better training methods."

For now, Powar has pinned his hopes of a good showing in the three-day game against the New Zealanders. "I will get my chances. I am very positive about it," he concludes.
