Miami Dolphins quarterback
Tua Tagovailoa says he's disturbed and emotional over body-camera footage that was released of teammate Tyreek Hill being handcuffed and thrown to the ground by the Miami-Dade police. Tagovailoa was nowhere near the incident that had occurred before the Dolphins' Sunday game, but it sent him into a tailspin.
Tua Tagovailoa on Tyreek Hill's Arrest Footage: I'm Deeply Disturbed
Tua Tagovailoa had his say on Tuesday, after the body-camera footage of the incident was made public. The quarterback said he was "emotional" as he watched the footage because of the close relationship he has with Hill. "Seeing it the first time, it was a little emotional for me, hearing Tyreek’s voice in the footage," Tagovailoa said.
More than that, it was also very touching for him, as he knew this person himself, which could be contrasted with the assumption that one would not care that much, especially when they saw such incidents involving complete strangers. "A lot of the instances that I see are of people that I don’t know and it’s happening to those people, so for it to have happened to somebody that I knew, and then hearing Tyreek’s voice throughout that – and we talked about it, it was a little emotional," Tagovailoa further said.
Other Things He Said
The QB also expressed his thoughts on how the police handled the situation. He opined that the encounter could have been handled differently. "I would say just watching the film, in my opinion, I think it could have been deescalated another way. I don’t think it was done the right way," he added.
Since the incident, Hill has initiated change within his community. He began reaching out to a number of his Dolphins teammates to discuss what they could do that might actually help in solving some of the serious underlying problems. “Tyreek has gathered a group of us together to do something, to help change some things,” says Tagovailoa, adding that the team has already begun to brainstorm ways in which they might be able to effect a little change.
That said, the team remains focused on their immediate tasks, but the quarterback did hint that plans in a more concrete fashion would be discussed soon: "He’s come up with a couple ideas and we’ve gathered to talk about what we wanted to do. Obviously, we’re going to worry about this week, but next week we’ll get back together and we’ll talk about how we can do something to change what is going on," Tagovailoa concluded.
The incident has not only pulled at the heartstrings but also driven the Dolphins men to see how they can be of help toward changing society. It's hard to say with him at the helm of it all exactly how that may start to take place.
