The Pittsburgh Steelers are still stuck in a holding pattern as they wait for Aaron Rodgers to decide whether he will return for the 2026 season or finally walk away. There is quiet optimism inside the building that clarity will come before the draft, but no one is fully convinced. With free agency moving and roster decisions piling up, the lack of a firm answer is starting to shape how Pittsburgh approaches its offseason, whether it wants to or not.

Steelers wait on Aaron Rodgers decision as draft clock ticks

The timeline, at least publicly, remains loose. Brian Batko offered a measured outlook, reflecting both hope and hesitation around the situation. “I think we’ll get a decision before then. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking on my part,” Batko said on The North Shore Drive podcast, via Steelers Depot’s Jake Brockhoff. “I’ll go ahead and say yes. [But] I don’t feel great about it.“The conversations at this point last year were probably more about selling Aaron on the Steelers, or quote unquote, recruiting him.“I just would venture to guess that this year, the conversations are not like that … it’s probably a lot more casual and easy going.”That shift in tone says a lot. The urgency of recruitment has faded, replaced by a quieter, more patient approach.
Still, patience has its limits. Even if a decision arrives before the draft, Pittsburgh could spend several more weeks navigating uncertainty at the most important position on the field. And there is no guarantee history will not repeat itself. Rodgers waited until June 5 last year before making his move.

Mixed signals emerge as Steelers seek clarity

Around the league, the sense is far from settled. Mike Garafolo recently pushed back on the idea that Rodgers’ return is inevitable, despite some belief that Pittsburgh remains his most logical landing spot.“When Mike McCarthy got hired, I know for a fact that hire was not about luring Rodgers back. But it did increase the chances of Rodgers coming back,” Garafolo said. “I don’t know if it’s a slam dunk, based on some of the conversations that I’ve had. I’m sure the Steelers would like some clarity before they get to the draft.”That uncertainty leaves the organization in a delicate spot. Mike McCarthy brings familiarity and credibility, but even that connection does not guarantee anything. Rodgers has long operated on his own timeline, and there is little reason to believe he will suddenly change now. From the Steelers’ perspective, the stakes are practical as much as they are competitive. They need to map out cap space, evaluate alternatives, and build a roster that can function with or without him. Rodgers, for his part, has earned the right to take his time. Still, Pittsburgh offered him an opportunity when options were thinning. At some point, the balance between patience and planning has to tip.
