The Pittsburgh Steelers are stepping into unfamiliar territory, but the hiring of Mike McCarthy signals a move toward a more offense-driven identity after nearly two decades under Mike Tomlin. With change comes tough decisions, especially at quarterback. Few voices carry more weight in Pittsburgh than Ben Roethlisberger, and he recently critiqued a frustrating trend in the NFL The former franchise quarterback believes the Steelers must resist shortcuts and think of the bigger picture by focusing on building a capable roster first, rather than giving full focus on the QB. His message is rooted in experience, and as speculation grows around Aaron Rodgers and young options like Will Howard, Roethlisberger’s perspective offered clarity at a moment when the franchise needs it most.

Big Ben urges team-first thinking while weighing Rodgers’ fit and Will Howard’s future

Speaking on In the Locker Room podcast, Roethlisberger pushed back against the modern trend of chasing quarterbacks before building a roster. He said, “I think a lot of teams want to put a quarterback in and then build around the quarterback. I would go the opposite direction,” He emphasized his preference, stating, “I would like to build a team and then stick a quarterback in it, kind of like what happened for me.”

Roethlisberger knows that model works because he has seen it in action.
When he entered the league, the Steelers were already stacked with veteran talent on both sides of the ball. That stability allowed him to grow fast and win early. A 15-1 rookie season and a Super Bowl title in year two were achieved under his commendable sportsmanship. Looking at the current roster, Roethlisberger believes Pittsburgh should repeat that formula. Recent reports suggest the Steelers are open to bringing Aaron Rodgers back for another run, especially with McCarthy now leading the team. Roethlisberger added, “With Mike McCarthy being here, I think that definitely gives Aaron Rodgers more like it perks his ears to potentially come back, right? Which I don’t think is the worst thing in the world. I think he, you know, and he’ll know this offense. I think that’s huge. While Rodgers could keep the Steelers competent and steady. Still, Roethlisberger is clear that he is not the long-term answer. That future, in his eyes, might belong to Will Howard. Roethlisberger said.“I’m a big believer in Will Howard. I think that he needs to get a chance.” He further praised Howard’s toughness, calling him “blue collar” and driven to win.
