NEW DELHI: Alabama safety Caleb Downs, a standout freshman who earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors, is reportedly set to enter the transfer portal. While several top programs vie for his services, Georgia has emerged as the "clear favorite" to land the talented defensive back, according to 247Sports.
Downs, rated as a five-star prospect and the top safety in the Class of 2023 by 247Sports, enjoyed a stellar debut season with the Crimson Tide.Despite Alabama reaching the College Football Playoff, Downs' decision to enter the transfer portal comes amidst the retirement of legendary coach Nick Saban, triggering a 30-day window for players to transfer.

The impact of Downs' potential departure would be substantial for Alabama and newly appointed head coach Kalen DeBoer. Downs' freshman campaign was marked by impressive performances, culminating in 107 tackles, two interceptions, and notable recognition with FWAA Freshman All-American and second-team All-SEC honors. His coverage grade of 88.9 from Pro Football Focus topped all safeties in the conference.

Georgia has emerged as a likely destination for Downs, given the recent hiring of Travaris Robinson, who coached Alabama's cornerbacks for the last two seasons, as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.

Robinson's established relationship with Downs, coupled with the proximity of Downs' high school, Mill Creek High School in Hoschton, Georgia, to the Bulldogs' campus, makes Georgia a natural fit.
However, should negotiations with Georgia falter, Downs remains a highly sought-after prospect. With two seasons left before he is eligible for the NFL Draft, he is considered one of the top non-quarterback transfers of the cycle. Ohio State is cited as a potential alternative destination for the talented defensive back.
Downs' potential departure adds to the challenges facing Alabama's secondary, as fellow high-profile cornerback Dezz Ricks has already announced a transfer to Texas A&M. With additional corners Trey Amos and Antonio Kite entering the transfer portal, DeBoer faces a significant overhaul of Alabama's 2024 secondary.
