“Christmas is our day”: NBA star LeBron James sent a blunt message to the NFL about the Christmas sports calendar

LeBron James declared Christmas as the NBA's day after the Los Angeles Lakers' win over the Golden State Warriors. Despite the NFL’s move to feature Christmas games, James insists the holiday belongs to basketball. The NBA's Christmas match between James and Curry showcased thrilling performances, cementing the day's association with basketball.

LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers claimed December 25 as the NBA's day following the win against the Golden State Warriors despite his preference for football. The high numbers of three-pointers have been hurting the ratings, and devaluation of the regular season has also been the major cause. Christmas Day became a special event to revive the league's buzz, but this was just a momentary respite from its fight to sustain its audience.
The NFL started a tradition in 2020 to have at least one Christmas game, even on days not typically scheduled for games. This year, the NFL had only two games: Ravens at Texans and Chiefs at Steelers, both of which ended in a blowout, resulting in minimal social media attention.

LeBron James’ stern message to the NFL

LeBron James was already vocal about the NFL's efforts to make Christmas games an even bigger event as the Los Angeles Lakers took a win against the Golden State Warriors. Netflix streamed two big NFL games where the Kansas City Chiefs took down the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Baltimore Ravens defeated the Houston Texans.

James was interviewed by ESPN's Lisa Salters after the Lakers defeated the Warriors 115-113 and sent a message to the NFL. "I love the NFL. I love the NFL. But Christmas is our day," James said. The NBA held five major games on Wednesday, featuring notable players and rising stars. James and the Lakers won the game, with him leading the way with 31 points, four rebounds, 10 assists, two steals, and a block, while Stephen Curry finished with 38 points and six assists.
Recently, the NFL started a tradition in 2020 to play at least one Christmas game, even if the holiday falls on a day not typically scheduled for games, despite never intentionally setting a Christmas game outside their regular schedule. The two games this year by the NFL, Ravens at Texans and Chiefs at Steelers, ended in blowouts without much social media attention.
LeBron and Curry's play in the NBA was gripping, and James' unstoppable legacy as an NBA player, finishing 21 seasons, became a must-watch show to fans at nearly 40. The NBA organized an exciting Christmas match between two of its most recognizable players, showcasing the league's marketable names and providing thrilling viewing for fans.

LeBron James and Curry have not been able to outshine the NFL on December 25th, but Christmas is still a basketball-centric holiday. The NFL may need something drastic to overshadow the NBA on their special day. It remains to be seen if this was the last holiday with LeBron and Curry, but Victor Wembanyama could be the new face of NBA Christmas. It may never be the same without the two signature superstars.
