Coach Jason Brown says if
Joe Burrow has another injury-riddled season, he is a bust.
Renowned sports columnist Jason Whitlock denies that but compares him to Andrew Luck. A former Indianapolis Colts quarterback who retired at the age of 29 because of injuries and non-stop rehabilitation.
Jason Brown is uncertain about Joe Burrow's health status in 2026 NFL season
Backstory: Joe Burrow was drafted as the first-round, 1st overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2020 NFL Draft. He signed a five-year, $275 million contract extension with Cincinnati in 2023.
Fiery former Last Chance U coach Jason Brown recently appeared on Jason Whitlock’s Fearless podcast, where he said that he is no longer a Joe Burrow fan.
Because “Is this guy going to stay healthy for a whole season? If he gets hurt again, is he a bust? Let’s just be honest, if he gets hurt again, he will have missed more games than he played.”
Burrow has played 77 regular-season games and missed 22 games in his first six NFL seasons due to injuries.
According to Draft Sharks, Joe Burrow has a 26 percent chance of injury in the 2026 NFL season. He has a 1.8 percent chance of injury per game and is projected to miss 0.5 games. His durability score is 4.68 out of 5.
Jason Whitlock compares Joe Burrow to Andrew Luck
Andrew Luck is a former Indianapolis Colts quarterback. He retired early from the NFL due to recurring injuries and never-stopping rehabilitation processes.
Like Joe Burrow, he was also highly cerebral and physically tough and was overall No. 1 draft pick. Andrew Luck was also thrust into the role of being a franchise savior early on in his gridiron career.
Both have similar total pressures throughout their NFL seasons. Luck endured 115 total sacks and 580 QB hits on 3000+ pass attempts. Burrow has taken a total of 213 sacks, enduring over 1,250 total pressures on 2800+ pass attempts.
Even NFL analyst and former quarterback Dan Orlovsky said last year that the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback was trending toward becoming this generation’s Andrew Luck.
Instead of comparing Burrow to Luck, why isn’t anyone talking about the Bengals’ struggling offense? Had the offense been strong, Burrow would have been protected on the gridiron.
But since he was not, he suffered from injuries. Injuries have kept him out of several games in 3 of 6 seasons. If he missed games again in 2026, the ratio would become 4 out of 7.
Jason Brown draws parallels to late basketball star Len Bias
Jason Whitlock didn’t necessarily agree when Coach Jason Brown called Burrow a bust. However, one name made Whitlock chuckle and prompted Brown to firmly explain Burrow’s stance: the late basketball player Len Bias.
When Jason Whitlock compared Joe Burrow to Andrew Luck, Jason Brown compared Burrow to Len Bias. “People don’t like to hear me say it, but Len Bias was a bust,” Brown said. “People don’t wanna have any real conversations.”
“When I think about it. You’re right, Len Bias was a bust,” Whitlock agreed. “And we run around like Len Bias is a hero. But Len Bias is a guy that went to a hotel room, used a bunch of cocaine, and died, killed himself.”
“Listen, I loved Len Bias growing up, but the bottom line is, he’s a bust,” Brown continued. “At the end of the day, we have these guys that get picked and drafted and don’t make it. And they’re bust. There’s no other word to use.
Whether it was an unfortunate mishap, or an underperforming mishap, you are a bust. You didn’t make it according to what your stature was, or your status was, or where you were picked. You didn’t make it. You’re a bust.”
