Commanders news: Washington agrees to one year extension with DL Drake Jackson
The Washington Commanders have decided to bring back defensive lineman Drake Jackson for another season, agreeing to a one-year contract extension ahead of the 2026 campaign. The move signals that Washington is willing to continue its experiment with the former second-round pick despite his recent injury setbacks.
Jackson’s agent confirmed the deal, which keeps the 26-year-old pass rusher in Washington after he joined the team midway through the 2025 season. While financial details were not publicly disclosed, the extension gives the Commanders another opportunity to evaluate Jackson’s long-term potential on the defensive line.
Washington initially signed Jackson in October 2025 as he worked his way back from the knee injury. The defensive end spent most of the season on injured reserve before finally returning late in the year.
He played in the final three games of the 2025 season, recording three tackles. While the statistical output was limited, the Commanders saw enough during those appearances and in practice to justify giving the former USC standout another opportunity.
Jackson's athletic potential probably had a big impact on the choice. While he was with the 49ers, he demonstrated that he could put pressure on the quarterback from the edge and that he could be a good rotational pass rusher. Washington expects that after another complete offseason of rest and training, he will be able to play more like he did at the beginning of his career.
The one-year pact is also a low-risk decision for the franchise. The Commanders can see if Jackson can stay healthy and keep making contributions before they make a long-term investment by keeping him on a short-term contract.
For Washington, the deal shows that the team is still looking for stability on the defensive front. In 2025, the Commanders had a hard time on defense, ranking near the bottom of the league in total defense and not putting much pressure on the other team's quarterbacks.
Because the edge rusher position wasn't producing, the team had to use short-term fixes all year. The Commanders can use Jackson again as they try to restore their pass rush for the new season.
Dan Quinn, the head coach, is known for having great defenses, so upgrading the front seven will probably be a top emphasis in the offseason. Jackson may fight for a spot in the rotation or just be a backup while Washington looks for further help through free agency or the draft.
In the end, the deal gives Jackson a chance to get his career back on track and the Commanders another chance to unleash the potential that made him a highly sought-after draft pick.
