How NFL Players InvestThe Philadelphia Eagles' 22-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons left fans very upset. Losing at home really stung. This defeat hurt more because the Eagles have dropped three of their last four games. Hopes were high after the excitement before the game. Jason Kelce’s dance outside Lincoln Financial Field even went viral. However, the game didn’t live up to what everyone expected, and lots of people are blaming defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
NFL expert John Middlekauff spoke about Fangio’s defense on his “3 and Out” podcast. He said head coach Nick Sirianni was getting too much blame and believed Fangio was the one who messed up. Fangio arrived from the Dolphins and signed a contract worth $5 million. Middlekauff noted that Fangio’s defensive tactics were soft and hurt the team.
Sirianni wasn’t really involved with the defense, so Fangio’s decisions, especially since the defensive line wasn’t performing well, were a big mistake.
The fight between the Eagles and Falcons was really tight. The last moments of the game mattered most. The Eagles had a six-point lead, but then Fangio chose soft defense. What happened? The Falcons moved 70 yards in a single minute. A touchdown by Drake London, followed by an extra point from Younghoe Koo, gave Atlanta the one-point win.
Another key moment came when Saquon Barkley, who’d just arrived from the New York Giants, messed up. He dropped an important pass with only two minutes left. The Eagles, ahead by three points, wanted to run the clock but had to settle for a field goal afterward. According to Sportskeeda, Barkley later said he felt bad, admitting, "I let my team down today. I shouldn't have put the defense in that position. If I make the catch, the game is over."
This isn’t the first time Fangio’s defensive choices caused some trouble. It already happened in Week 14 of the 2023 season when his Miami Dolphins lost to the Tennessee Titans. The Titans went 64 yards in less than 30 seconds and won 28-27. Fangio used a more fierce defense in the preseason, but this time, he didn’t. Fans and reporters are still disappointed with how it all ended.
