Former NFL Punter Chris Kluwe claims MAGA protest led to his dismissal as high school football coach

Former Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe recently found himself at the center of controversy after being fired from his position as a high school football coach following his protest at a city council meeting in Huntington Beach, California. Kluwe, known for his outspoken views on social issues, was arrested after criticizing a commemorative plaque that celebrated former President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) slogan. His dismissal has sparked discussions about freedom of speech, political expression, and the consequences of activism.

Chris Kluwe was arrested on February 18 after protesting at a Huntington Beach City Council meeting. The controversy arose when the council approved a commemorative plaque at a public library that used the words "Magical, Alluring, Galvanizing, and Adventurous" to spell out MAGA. Kluwe did not hold back his disapproval, labeling the MAGA movement as a "Nazi movement" and announcing his intention to engage in peaceful civil disobedience. After stepping onto the stage, he was quickly arrested and escorted out by the police for disrupting the assembly.
Reflecting on his protest, Kluwe stated, “I knew it was a possible consequence... I think it just goes to show what MAGA actually stands for – they don’t want to build anything, they just want to tear people and institutions down to make themselves feel better, regardless of what it costs the community.” His arrest has prompted debates on the boundaries of civil protest and its repercussions.
Following his arrest, Kluwe was informed that he was being let go from his job as a freshman football coach at Edison High School in Huntington Beach. He had held the position for about five years, and the news of his firing was delivered to him on Thursday, shortly after his protest made headlines. According to Kluwe, the school’s decision was influenced by the negative attention his actions had brought to the institution.

Kluwe expressed his frustration on social media, saying, “Just got fired from being a freshman football coach, if you want to know what MAGA does to communities... They only care about trying to hurt people.” He also voiced skepticism about the school’s ability to replace him, highlighting the rarity of having an ex-NFL player coach at that level.
Kluwe revealed that he had never faced any issues at the school prior to his protest and that he is now exploring his legal options, including potential involvement from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He shared with the Star Tribune that he was not provided with a specific reason for his dismissal beyond the claim of bringing unwanted attention to the school.

Kluwe’s activism is not new. During his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings from 2005 to 2012, he was known for his vocal support of social issues, including same-sex marriage. He previously claimed that his release from the Vikings was due to his advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and his outspoken political views. After retiring from the NFL, Kluwe alleged that his activism cost him further opportunities in professional football.
