Houston Texans kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn missed a costly field goal attempt in a 32-27 loss to the Tennessee Titans

In the fourth quarter, Houston Texans kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn set an all-time record for his team with a 54-yard field goal against the Tennessee Titans. But he missed a 28-yard field goal that would have given the Texans the victory, sending the game into overtime, which Tennessee won, 32-27, forcing a late safety. This was Fairbairn's second miss from within 30 yards this season. This season, there have been only four total instances where a kicker has missed a field goal shorter than 30 yards. Fairbairn has half of them.

He earned varsity letters for three years at UCLA, playing college football, and was a consensus first-team All-American as a senior, when he was also awarded the Lou Groza Award as the nation's top college kicker in 2015. After winning the kicking position as a true freshman, Fairbairn became the Pac-12 Conference record holder for the most career points scored. He went undrafted right out of college but opted to sign with Houston as a free agent and was named their kicker in 2017.

Fairbairn's doled-out field goal attempt underscored how hard kickers feel the weight of responsibility on their shoulders, especially when it matters most. Houston plays Jacksonville at Week 13's road game, with a win that would send them to 4-1 in AFC South contests this year. With a win at home, they might well have clinched the AFC South title. Houston could be looking for a nickel defender if Jalen Pitre misses multiple games.
