It’s no secret that
Taylor Swift and
Travis Kelce’s relationship is one of the most heavily publicised celebrity relationships in recent times. But does their mega popularity actually translate into more numbers or better viewership for the league? NFL insider and sports pundit Ian Rapaport believes their romance can actually benefit the league in real terms.
Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce Romance Benefitting NFL And Football In General?
It’s no secret that fans have coined the term ‘Tayvoodoo’ to describe the Grammy winner’s influence on Travis’s games. Taylor’s influence has introduced millions of younger fans to the world of the NFL, which has also helped Travis’s profile, even though he’s having a not-so-great year underwhelming year. The Chiefs vs. Jets game featuring Taylor in the stands hit 27 million viewers—the highest number of non-Super Bowl Sunday viewers.
“They seem to make each other very happy. They seem to be extremely into each other's worlds, which, for anyone who's in a relationship like that, that's an amazing thing and not always reality,” Rapoport said in a recent interview.
Rapaport shared the example of his wife who is not a football fan but keeps tabs on the games even if he doesn’t break a big story. The analyst believes Taylor and Travis share something similar.
Rapaport believes a high-profile celebrity like Taylor can only bring more eyeballs to the games and create enthusiasm in younger minds. “One thing about Taylor Swift is she has opened the door to so many young girls, and not just young girls, but fans of hers who weren't previously fans of football to turn on a game,” said Rapoport. “So whether or not an 8-year-old girl or a 20-year-old man or whoever is turning on Netflix to say, like, ‘Hey, I wonder if Taylor's gonna be there.’”
“Come for Taylor, stay for football. That's good; I'm all for it. I think it's been great,” he added.
Swift and Kelce started dating in September 2023 and throughout the season, Swift attended around 13 more of Kelce's games, including Super Bowl LVIII.
It’s important to remember that the NFL is a league that thrives on ratings, advertisements and commercial popularity. Whether Taylor’s cheering for Travis in the stands or the couple is spotted her shows, Taylor’s star power has definitely helped the NFL player and his league. Earlier this year, he signed a two-year extension worth $34 million. His jersey sales reportedly spiked by 400% after the couple started dating. So, it’s clear that Taylor's and Travis’s romance can actually translate to commercial gains for the league.
