“It’s just a very delicate issue,” Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said earlier this week about quarterback
Jordan Love’s pathway through the concussion protocol. “You know what I’m saying in terms of, we’ve seen it with certain guys they come in, they feel great one day and then the next day they don’t, so, it kind of is a little bit of a moving target.”
The 27-year-old signal caller sustained a concussion in last Saturday’s overtime loss to the Chicago Bears. Love was sacked by Bears defensive end Austin Booker in the second quarter of the Week 16 matchup and took a helmet-to-helmet hit. Booker was flagged for roughing the passer while Jordan stayed on the gridiron for several minutes. After evaluation, he was ruled out for the rest of the game. The Packers lost to the Bears 22-16 in overtime, and the Bears still lead the NFC North with 11-4 record.
Backup QB Malik Willis will start against the Baltimore Ravens despite illness and sore right shoulder
On Friday, Love was moved from questionable to out [left shoulder/concussion] because he did not clear all stages of the concussion protocol. Green Bay will start backup quarterback Malik Willis on Saturday night against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 17. Willis dealt with illness and a sore right shoulder this week but is expected to start.
Ravens coach Harbaugh spoke highly of the 26-year-old signal caller, Willis, on Wednesday.
“Malik has done a great job,” Harbaugh said. “I think he’s had a good year when he’s played. He’s very elusive back there. He throws a good ball. His timing and his mechanics have really looked good this year. So, he’s obviously a very dangerous quarterback. He looked good in this last game he played [against the Bears]. So, we’ll be very much very respectful of him or whoever’s back there playing quarterback.”
Willis filled in for Love against Chicago, completing nine of 11 passes for 121 yards and one touchdown. In four seasons, this will be his sixth career start.
Green Bay placed linebacker and special teamer Kristian Welch on injured reserve [ankle]. Guard Aaron Banks [neck/illness] and wide receiver Savion Williams [foot/illness] are listed as questionable to play against Baltimore. Star pusher Micah Parsons has been out for the season after suffering a torn ACL in the Week 15 34-26 loss to the Denver Broncos.
Throughout the week, Jordan Love was a limited participant on Tuesday and Wednesday. The pressure is lower now that the Packers have secured a playoff spot. Love can take the time he needs to recover and complete the concussion protocol so he can come back stronger.
However, to win the NFC North Division, they need to win both remaining games: one against Baltimore and one against Chicago. Their current season record is 9-5-1.
