Veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins' future with the Atlanta Falcons remains uncertain after his late-season benching in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr. Despite signing a four-year, $180 million deal, Cousins was replaced as the starter after struggling with injuries and inconsistency. Now, as the 36-year-old signal-caller looks ahead, he insists he still has “a lot of good football left” and is determined to continue his NFL career, whether in Atlanta or elsewhere.
Cousins’ 2023 season was cut short due to an Achilles tear, and while he recovered in time for the 2024 campaign, his performances were far from his best. After starting the season 6-3, he suffered shoulder and elbow injuries in a Week 10 loss to the New Orleans Saints, leading to a sharp decline in his form. Over the next five games, he threw just one touchdown and nine interceptions, forcing the Falcons to make a change.
Penix took over in Week 16, showing flashes of brilliance, which all but solidified him as Atlanta’s quarterback of the future. This left Cousins in an unfamiliar situation, as he now faces the prospect of becoming a backup for the first time in over a decade.
What’s Next for Cousins?
Cousins still has three years left on his contract, but Atlanta has options.
Cutting him before March 17 would save the team $10 million, while a post-June 1 trade could clear $27.5 million in cap space. However, moving him before then would bring significant financial penalties. Reports suggest that a release is the most likely outcome, as Atlanta is keen to build around Penix.
For Cousins, the focus remains on getting fully healthy. He emphasized that his primary goal is rehabbing his injuries, stating, “I’m no good to a team if I’m not feeling really good.” If he is released, there will likely be plenty of interest from teams needing a veteran presence at quarterback.
While his time in Atlanta may be nearing an end, Cousins remains confident in his ability to compete at a high level. As the NFL offseason approaches, all eyes will be on whether the Falcons decide to move on, or if Cousins will get one more shot in Atlanta’s quarterback battle.
