Patrick Graham steps into a pressure-packed Steelers role as Mike McCarthy sets an early championship tone

The Pittsburgh Steelers did not waste time regarding their intentions with their latest coaching move. When Patrick Graham was hired as defensive coordinator, the expectations were laid out immediately by head coach Mike McCarthy. This was not framed as a rebuild or a long adjustment period for the team, but rather a direct push toward contention.

McCarthy recently stressed the importance of defense and how a strong one matters if one wants to win championships. Thus, the hiring of Graham was a well-thought-out move due to his rich history, and McCarthy is confident and excited about the Steelers' defense that he hopes will live up to their glory days.

Why this pairing signals urgency and opportunity for Pittsburgh

McCarthy made his stance clear when discussing Graham’s hire. He said, “I’m really excited about the defense. …Defense wins championships. The history of the Steelers defense and staying with the 3-4 is important, as far as the origin of it. That’s something we have to build off of.” (as per ESPN).


For Graham, this role offers something he rarely had in previous stops. In Las Vegas, he often worked with one of the league’s lowest-paid defenses while draft capital leaned heavily toward offense. In Pittsburgh, the situation is the opposite, as they have invested more in defense than any other team in recent years. That commitment is expected to continue with extension talks looming for Joey Porter Jr., Nick Herbig, and Keeanu Benton.

McCarthy’s belief in Graham is rooted in experience, as he continued saying, “I’ve been a head coach for 18 years. I’ve had one top-five defense, and we won the Super Bowl that year. The importance of defense is critical.” Graham told The Athletic in 2024, “There’s no Pat Graham playbook. Yeah, there’s stuff that comes from my New England time, my time at Green Bay. But to me, it’s all about who you have. What pieces do you have?”

Considering the elite talent, financial backing, and a head coach openly tying defense to championships, Graham finally has the environment to fully show what he can do. McCarthy summed it up best when he said he “loves the roster” and “feels good about the direction.” It is indeed exciting times for the Steelers with Graham’s arrival.
