The New England Patriots have witnessed a promising start from their rookie quarterback, Drake Maye, over his first five games. With Maye under center, the team has managed two wins in their last three outings, showing a rejuvenated offensive spark. The young quarterback has notched seven touchdowns through the air, added another on the ground, and is completing 64.7% of his passes—a performance that hints at a promising future.
Drake Maye finds rhythm in the game
Despite his progress, Maye encountered a challenging moment in the Patriots' recent 19-3 victory over the Chicago Bears. While attempting a pass to tight end Austin Hooper, Maye made a fateful decision to pump-fake before throwing, but instead of a clean escape, he delivered the ball straight to Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards.
The play drew critique from offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, who acknowledged Maye’s strong recent performances but also remarked that the turnover “will haunt him for the rest of the season.” Van Pelt humorously noted, “That was as easy as it gets to throw it away over the head of the tight end there and (he) just short-armed it a little bit and got stuck,” emphasizing that the best place for the ball, when no option is open, is “the tuba player in Row 4.” His light-hearted reference to football game traditions underscored the simplicity of avoiding interceptions in such situations.
Turnovers aside, Maye has brought renewed energy and effectiveness to the Patriots’ offense compared to earlier in the season. The stats reveal a notable improvement since Week 6, with the team averaging over seven additional points and gaining more than 40 extra yards per game since Maye took over for Jacoby Brissett.
