NEW DELHI: The Denver Broncos are reportedly set to bring on board former New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, according to a report from NOLA.com on Tuesday.

While the specific role for Carmichael within the Broncos' coaching staff remains undisclosed, the move is anticipated to reunite him with Broncos head coach Sean Payton and potentially offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.

The 52-year-old Carmichael was let go on January 16 after an extensive 18-year tenure with the New Orleans Saints. His time with the Saints included a significant period as the offensive coordinator working under then-Saints head coach Sean Payton.

Carmichael originally joined Payton's coaching staff in 2006, initially working with the team's quarterbacks and passing game for three seasons. Since 2009, he has held the position of offensive coordinator, navigating the coaching transition from Payton to Dennis Allen.

The Saints concluded the 2023 season with a 9-8 record, ranking 14th in total offense with an average of 337.2 yards per game and 21st in rushing offense with 102.5 yards. Despite their offensive performance, the Saints narrowly missed the playoffs, losing out in a tiebreaker with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the NFC South division title.

The reunion between Carmichael, Payton, and potentially Lombardi in Denver signals an intriguing development for the Broncos' coaching staff, as they aim to strengthen their team for the upcoming seasons.
