The 2023 Netflix series “Receiver” captured Davante Adams in raw form. He played for the Las Vegas Raiders at the time. In the Raiders’ Week 6 game against the New England Patriots, he was heard saying on the mic, “I gotta get the [- - -] outta here before I lose my [- - -] life. I ain’t never been hit this many [- - -] times in my career. Every game, I get [- - -] up.”In Adams’ recent-most interview with Stephen A. Smith on the NBA Analyst’s self-named show, the 33-year-old wideout changed his stance from “I gotta get the [- - -] outta here” to “I don’t need to think about retiring.” What changed his outlook? Why did he continue to stay in the NFL and stop thinking about retirement? Let’s find out.

Raw emotion on Netflix

The six-time Pro Bowler took several hits in the 2023 season, one brutal hit when he was trying to absorb a slant pass from the then-Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Another was when he injured his right shoulder on an off target throw from Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell. “You saw raw emotion [on Netflix],” Adams said via ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez in August 2024. “And that was just a genuine look at what we were going through, and it wasn’t always the brightest point, but there was a lot of good moments too.Obviously, it’s a television show, so there are going to be certain narratives.
Not that it was not accurate, because it was very accurate to the way I felt, the way the team felt, and the kind of place we were in as a unit.”

Retirement was a real thought

Stephen A. Smith asked Adams: “You turned 33, Christmas Eve, December 24th. How much time you think you got left? Once upon a time, people wondered how much time you have left, but I look at you in Los Angeles, I’m like, ‘You got plenty of time left.’ How much time do you think you got left?” The six-time Pro Bowler replied, “I’m just staying focused. If I can continue to run 21-22 miles an hour at 33-32 years old, the Good Lord keep blessing me with my health. I can only control so much. But I like to think that where I’m at right now, I don’t need to think about retiring.Unfortunately, coming into this season, that was a real thought in my mind that, just based off of how things have been going lately, that could be the reality here soon, but we’ll finish this year out, and then we’ll have a better idea coming out of this year. But I still won’t be able to say next year or the year after that exactly but keep working and the Good Lord keep blessing me, man. Hopefully, we got plenty more time.”

Davante Adams wants Los Angeles Rams to be his last stop

Smith: “Is it fair to say, you can’t be anywhere else but Los Angeles as long as Matthew Stafford and Sean McVay did?” Stafford is 37 years old, and McVey is 39 years old [he was the youngest NFL coach (30 years old) hired as a head coach at Los Angeles].Adams: “That is very, very, very fair to say. I like to think that I don’t wanna make any more stops, man. I’ve already played for more teams than what I thought I would. I would love it if this could be my last stop.” In his 12-year NFL career, Adams has played for the Green Bay Packers, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, and his current team, the Los Angeles Rams.
