Sean McVay’s Rams add Kliff Kingsbury and Robert Woods in bold 2026 coaching shake-up

The Los Angeles Rams walked away from the 2025 season knowing it was not good enough. The offense lacked its usual sharpness, the rhythm never truly settled, and for a team led by Sean McVay, that inconsistency stood out. McVay did not promise dramatic roster headlines right away, but he made it obvious that change was coming.

On Feb. 23, 2026, that change became official. Sean McVay's Rams added Kliff Kingsbury to the coaching staff and welcomed back Robert Woods, a move that blends experience with familiarity as the franchise resets for 2026.

Rams reinforce McVay's vision with Kliff Kingsbury's experience and Robert Woods' return

Kliff Kingsbury's addition to the Rams is a great move by McVay. The star joins as assistant head coach after spending the past two seasons as offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders. Before that, he led the Arizona Cardinals from 2019 to 2022, guiding them to a playoff appearance in 2021. His teams often started fast, and his offensive structure leaned heavily on spacing, tempo, and quarterback comfort.


Now he steps into a different situation. Kliff Kingsbury's coaching in Los Angeles will not involve primary play-calling duties, as McVay will continue to control the offence. Instead, Kingsbury becomes a senior offensive voice, someone who can challenge ideas during game planning and help refine weekly strategy. His experience against NFC West defenses during his Arizona tenure also gives the Rams an added layer of insight into the division.


While Kingsbury brings an outside perspective, Robert Woods restores internal identity. Earlier this offseason, Woods signed a one-day deal to retire as a Ram after a 12-year NFL career. He played under Sean McVay from 2017 to 2021 and helped the team reach Super Bowl LIII in 2018. His impact went beyond receptions. He blocked in the run game, handled motion responsibilities and thrived in high-leverage moments.

Now Robert Woods returns as assistant wide receivers coach, working with a young unit that needs steadiness. Players in that room understand what he accomplished in the same system. That credibility cannot be manufactured.

Looking at the position coaches on offense, the responsibilities are clearly laid out. Rob Calabrese will coach the wide receivers, Ryan Wendell handles the offensive line, Scott Huff works with the tight ends, and Ron Gould leads the running backs. Zak Kromer and Brian Allen will serve as assistant coaches on the offensive line.

The broader reshuffle also includes Nate Scheelhaase stepping into the offensive coordinator role following Mike LaFleur's exit. In that context, the Kliff Kingsbury Rams partnership and Woods' return do not feel cosmetic.
