The unyielding story of Tanner McKee, cancer survivor

Football fans everywhere are cheering for Tanner McKee, the rising star quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. However, before he was throwing perfect spirals on the gridiron, he was facing a much tougher opponent of cancer. This isn't just a journey about a talented athlete because it's a story of incredible strength. If that wasn’t enough, it’s also the story of a watchful mother's love, and a life-changing victory that happened long before his name appeared on a team roster.At just sixteen years old, an age when most teens are focused on homework and first dates, Tanner was diagnosed with melanoma, the most serious kind of skin cancer. This same disease had tragically claimed his great-grandfather, making the news even more frightening for his family.It all started when his mom, Layna, noticed a suspicious-looking mole with uneven edges on his hairline. Her mother's instinct took over, and she immediately got him an appointment with a dermatologist. Biopsies were taken from six moles on his back, chest, and forehead, and the one on his forehead came back positive for cancer. As Tanner would later say, he had no idea what it meant, but he could tell his mom was nervous.The seriousness of his diagnosis became very clear during his surgery. Doctors had to remove the cancer, the surrounding tissue, and the lymph nodes. The surgery was incredibly risky because one of the nodes was located near a nerve that controls his right arm, which is also his throwing arm. The threat of permanent damage to his football career was very real, and if the cancer had spread, he would have had to undergo chemotherapy. This experience taught him a powerful lesson he still carries with him: don't take anything for granted because things can change in an instant. Though he describes being blissfully ignorant as a teenager, the gravity of the situation was never lost on his family.Today, a long scar on his forehead serves as a daily reminder of his battle. While his helmet or a cap often hides it, Tanner sees it every single morning. It reminds him to protect himself every day by applying SPF 70 sunscreen and wearing a long-sleeved shirt. These simple acts demonstrate that his fight against the disease is an ongoing part of his life. Now twenty-five, Tanner is a valuable player for the Eagles, a Super Bowl ring winner, and a player widely considered on his way to becoming a future NFL starter.
