Matthew Stafford’s wife Kelly once talked about
Taylor Swift getting all the attention in
NFL games and then found herself in a controversy. Kelly Stafford never expected her casual podcast remarks to spark such a fierce reaction. Yet when she admitted feeling worn out by how often Taylor Swift appeared during broadcasts, the response was swift and deeply personal. What followed left her balancing her love for the artist with the sting of public judgment.
Kelly Stafford has lived around football long enough to understand attention comes with the territory. Still, she found herself caught off guard by the scale of criticism. The conversation was never meant as an attack. It was an honest reaction to how the game, at times, felt secondary to a celebrity presence. That nuance, she learned, can easily get lost once fans decide otherwise.
Kelly Stafford’s past Taylor Swift remark sparked fierce fan backlash, and the controversy still shocks NFL fans
The moment traces back to her podcast, where she admitted feeling overwhelmed by Swift’s constant presence on NFL coverage while supporting Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs. Her words were reflective, not hostile. Still, the reaction was immediate.
“Honestly, I did get a lot of heat from them,” she told Us Weekly. “I was like, ‘Whoa, I love Taylor.’”
Her frustration came from overexposure, not dislike. “When you’re constantly seeing someone on your social media every scroll, you kind of lose that love, you know?” Stafford continued. “That’s what I was saying. I was like, ‘I’m seeing her every second, I’m never wondering about what she’s doing.’”
She later acknowledged there may have been more behind those feelings. Speaking candidly, she admitted, “It was a good business decision for the NFL, but I almost felt like it was outshining the games. I think that’s what bothered me. I was a little jealous of the fact that they were getting all this attention and all of a sudden the football game was the sideshow. So, yeah, maybe I let jealousy get the best of me.”
The backlash left a mark. “Comments that are mean, they hurt my feelings,” she said. “I have feelings and I’m not going to sit here and act like I don’t. I’ve tried to develop some thick skin to understand what my values are and sticking to those regardless of what people say about me. It’s scary because, even as an adult, my self confidence is intertwined with people that are commenting who don’t even know me.”
What made the reaction more complicated was her genuine admiration for Swift. She took her daughters to the Eras Tour and even joined her husband in dressing up as Swift and Kelce for Halloween. She also made clear she understood why cameras showed Swift so often. “For sure you show her,” Stafford said. “She’s doing the same thing I’m doing or Brittany Mahomes is doing. She’s there supporting the man that she loves. If you’re gonna show families, you’re gonna show family. She is Travis Kelce’s family. So you’re definitely going to show her.”
Stafford knows firsthand how families become part of the broadcast. When Matthew returned to face the Detroit Lions in the playoffs with the Los Angeles Rams, cameras found her and their daughters in the stands, sharing in the moment like any football family would.
