For two decades, Tom Brady defined perfection and excellence as the legendary quarterback in New England. Championships felt routine. However, Brady’s final game as a Patriot in the 2019 season did not end in the way he hoped to finish his career. A pick-six in the Wild Card round against the Tennessee Titans marked his last throw in Foxborough colors. While at the time, it looked like a rare misstep that led to the close of the Kelce-Belichick dynasty, a recent revelation by Kay Adams about Patriots owner Robert Kraft gives new insight into what happened behind the scenes. According to Kraft, Vrabel’s leadership and team management laid the seeds for his current position as Patriots’ head coach.

How one playoff loss changed Robert Kraft’s view and pushed Vrabel forward

The details surfaced during a recent episode of the Up & Adams Show. Host Kay Adams shared a conversation she had with Robert Kraft that reframed the night Brady’s Patriots were eliminated. He said, “I sat down with Mr. Kraft in August…it was in that wild card game in which Vrabel outcoached Belichick, the one that you, my friend Logan Ryan, starred in… you helped Vrabel get this gig.”

Ryan, a former Patriots defensive back, was at the center of it all.
He explained how Tennessee baited Brady by showing the same defensive look twice. Just before halftime, Ryan was positioned inside because he understood Brady’s tendencies. He read Brady’s eyes and jumped the route, but dropped the interception because he was already thinking about the return.Ryan said, “I go into halftime, and Mike Vrabel’s like this—he’s like, ‘Hey, we need our best players to make these plays because Tom’s not going to give us those chances again,’ and I knew who that was directed to clearly, and I said, ‘All right, Braves, I’m going to catch the next one.’ I promise you I’m gonna catch the next one. Move on.”Later in the game, the Titans ran the same defense again, and this time, Ryan finished the play. He recalled, “So Vrabel vocally called me out at halftime… we’re in the same exact defense end of game. I caught the next one… and Vrabel said, I knew you would.”That interception sealed the game and Brady’s exit. Ryan later reflected in a 2019 interview, saying, “Yeah, I thought I blew up the Death Star a little bit.” The loss ended an era. It also gave Kraft a clear picture of leadership beyond New England.
