Top 5 NFL teams you didn’t know existed in league history
The NFL was quite different in its early years than it is now. During the 1920s and 1930s, teams quickly formed, moved, and went out of business. Franchises were in small areas, money was tight, and winning wasn't always the most important thing. Even though most people don't remember their names, a lot of these teams helped shape professional football.
These five NFL teams aren't well-known, but they still had an impact on the history of the league.
The Canton Bulldogs were one of the NFL’s first great teams. Based in Ohio, they featured legendary player Jim Thorpe and helped bring credibility to professional football at a time when college football was far more popular. Canton won multiple league titles in the early 1920s and drew national attention to the young league.
Despite their success, the team struggled financially and folded in 1926. Their legacy lives on in a big way Canton later became the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, largely because of the Bulldogs’ early influence.
The Akron Pros hold a special place in history as the NFL’s first official champions. They finished the 1920 season undefeated and were awarded the league’s first title.
However, like many small-market teams, Akron could not keep up as the league expanded. Poor attendance and limited revenue forced the team to shut down in 1926. Even today, their championship remains a permanent part of NFL records.
The Dayton Triangles played in the very first NFL game ever. That alone makes them one of the league’s most important early teams.
Although they were competitive at the start, Dayton quickly fell behind as bigger cities invested more in their franchises. The team relocated several times before folding in 1929. Interestingly, their franchise lineage eventually led to the modern-day Indianapolis Colts.
The Rock Island Independents were another first NFL franchise that was based in Illinois. They were recognized for having a strong line and were competitive in the league's early years.
In a risky move the team left the NFL to join a rival league in the mid-1920s. The decision proved fatal. The rival league collapsed, and Rock Island never returned to the NFL, disappearing from professional football soon after.
The Tonawanda Kardex hold one of the strangest records in NFL history. The team played just one game, a loss and then folded immediately due to financial problems.
Despite their extremely short existence, they are still officially listed in NFL records. Today, they remain one of the league’s most obscure and unusual franchises.
These teams that no one remembers show us how unstable the NFL used to be. Before billion-dollar TV deals and full stadiums, professional football survived by trying things out, making mistakes, and losing a lot of teams. The NFL would be substantially different now if it weren't for these early franchises.
