Mitch Marner's first game againts Toronto Maple Leafs in a Las Vegas Golden Knights jersey was packed with feelings, though he was not the only one who wanted to see his name on the scoresheet more. He ended the game with two assists during a power play in a 6–5 overtime victory, and both assists were during the power play. He was even booed by the Toronto fans present in the arena, which was a very peculiar situation to witness on the ice in the city of blessings, and it seemed as if it was a reminder of everything that had been left behind by Marner.

One of the things that really came out was that he had none of the hero’s burden. Jack Eichel netted the winner in overtime and had four points in total. Pavel Dorofeyev scored twice, Tomas Hertl got two points, and Mark Stone had one goal and two assists, which made his point streak reach 10 games. Marner was part of the game; however, he was not the one to bring the night noise as he was in Toronto.

In Toronto, there was pressure on Marner all the time. After defeats or playoff exits, the questions almost always returned to his production and his contract. That pressure does not exist in Vegas. Marner is currently the Golden Knights’ highest-paid player, yet he is not the only star on the team, and that depth acts like a barrier.
Through the participation in 46 matches, Marner is the sixth-best goal scorer of the team with 5 goals. That kind of stat line would’ve caused an uproar in Toronto, especially after signing a massive long-term deal. In Vegas, it hardly registers since the team keeps winning. In fact, Marner was held pointless and finished minus-1 against San Jose last week, and the Golden Knights still won 7–2.

Mitch Marner's situation offers a parallel to Phil Kessel's move from Toronto to Pittsburgh; however, the new, reduced role provided greater team success and personal satisfaction. Marner has mainly contributed to the team while being on the power play, where his superior vision has also brought others success. By his standards, it's been a good, not great season, but on this roster, that is more than enough.

Marner no longer has to bear the burden of being the franchise's face. He may find the sharing of the spotlight in Vegas to be just what he needs to rediscover his joy in playing and winning, too.
