On Friday, WWE SmackDown made its highly anticipated return to the USA Network, bringing with it a fresh new theme song and updated graphics. The episode was packed with excitement, featuring a world title steel cage match, a surprise appearance by Triple H, and the much-anticipated return of Roman Reigns. However, a particular moment that drew significant attention from the
WWE fanbase was the introduction of Ricky Gibson, who was billed as a "local enhancement talent" and was set to be the tag team partner for Kevin Owens.
This plan was quickly derailed when Randy Orton stepped in to assist Owens.
Kevin Owens' Surprising Tag Team Partner: The Rise of Ricky Gibson on SmackDown!"
Upon Randy Orton's arrival on SmackDown, Owens wasted no time and delivered a Stunner to Gibson before kicking off his match against A-Town Down Under. After the show, WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray took to "
Busted Open Radio" to discuss the impact of this pre-match storyline.
Bully Ray highlighted the effectiveness of WWE's storytelling, saying,
"Before Friday night, before he came to the ring as Kevin Owens' mystery partner, did you know who Ricky Gibson was?" He continued,
"As of today, do you know who Ricky Gibson is? ... That is the power of WWE television. ... Within 90 seconds, you now know who Ricky Gibson is. They can get anything and anyone over, if they want to." His comments underscored the impressive ability of WWE to elevate even lesser-known talents to the forefront of the audience's attention through compelling segments.

Bully Ray is not fully convinced that Ricky Gibson will become a regular fixture on WWE television or receive a major "push" in the traditional sense. However, he envisions a scenario where Gibson could carve out a memorable role similar to that of Mikey Whipwreck in ECW. According to Bully, Gibson has the potential to elicit strong audience sympathy, much like Whipwreck did, even without getting a significant amount of offense in his matches. This sympathetic character development could eventually culminate in a dramatic payoff, such as Gibson scoring an unexpected victory at a major event like WWE
WrestleMania, which would surely generate a tremendous reaction from the crowd.
Bully Ray posed an intriguing hypothetical scenario to illustrate this point:
"Could you imagine if Logan Paul or somebody like that ... had an open challenge at WrestleMania, and Ricky Gibson answered the open challenge and rolled up Logan Paul?" He suggested that such a surprising outcome could be an effective way to highlight Gibson's potential.
In addition to drawing comparisons with Whipwreck, Bully Ray also noted that Gibson reminded him of former WWE star Santino Marella, who was known for his ability to blend comedy with professional wrestling. Following the Stunner delivered by Owens, Gibson did not appear again on SmackDown, but Bully remains optimistic about the possibility of seeing him return. The positive reception to Gibson's segment on Friday leaves Bully hopeful that WWE might consider bringing him back for future appearances.
