Last night on Monday Night Raw, things took a dramatic turn, however, not inside the ring but on the mic. While being in the commentary box, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s impromptu joke about the former New Day member, Big E, left the fans stunned as the joke was widely perceived as crossing the line. Putting on his commentary mask, Hinchcliffe graced the event with his humor for the World tag team title match between The New Day and The War Raiders. Everything was going swiftly until the comedian’s joke referring to Big E’s previous severe neck injuries; things went a little downhill from there as fans took this uncalled jibe online. The attention that this moment drew has now made the former New Day member address the arisen situation.
Big E addresses controversial segment on RAW
On the April 6 episode of Monday, things went south when guest commentator and comedian Hinchcliffe’s spontaneous joke referring to Big E’s neck was poorly perceived among the audience. While doing what he does best, Hinchcliffe’s joke was,
“The only thing stiffer than Michael Cole is Big E’s neck.” This was the moment where fans drew a line and called out Hinchcliffe for being insensitive while joking about Big E’s neck considering the severe injuries the WWE wrestler has sustained in the past.
While Big E did not respond to this joke at the heat of the moment, he did not seem very pleased either. Addressing this spontaneous moment that ignited online debates, Big E stepped up to address the series of events while speaking on the
Raw Recap with Sam Roberts and Megan Morant podcast. The former New Day member stated,
“At my big age of 39 years old, people will say what they want about you… Has nothing to do with me. That’s not my business. Say what you want. He was given a mic; he was given an opportunity. People will feel how they want to.”He further continued,
“It was said on the show. I’m supposed to talk, especially when things are mentioned about me; I should have an opinion about them. It’s just, it is tiring to have to weigh in on everyone’s opinion or whatever they say. Look, I’m not hurt; I’m good. I want the discourse to be happy without me, honestly… I didn’t sign up for this (he laughed). I wasn’t aware of this. He did what he wanted to. People signed off on it. It has nothing to do with me. Truly.” While Big E decided to handle this with utmost grace, fans have still not forgotten the recent remark. Following are a few fans tweets:
