Elon Musk: I am confident that Neuralink will restore hearing one day, just as we will restore eyesight with our ...
Elon Musk has predicted new capabilities for the Neuralink brain implant chip. In a recent post shared on the microblogging site X (formerly Twitter), the 'sworld's richest man said he is confident Neuralink will one day be able to restore hearing. Tesla and SpaceX CEO made this remark in response to a post by a deaf educator who praised the billionaire and SpaceX employees for their support for deaf children.Replying to an X post by user @deaflibertarian, Musk wrote: "I am confident that Neuralink will restore hearing one day, just as we will restore vision with our Blindsight implant."The comment came after the educator wrote, "Elon Musk and his staff at SpaceX truly care DO about deaf kids. More details to come! But basically, I will love him forever," while thanking Musk and SpaceX staff for what she described as their support for deaf children.

What is Neuralink’s Blindsight and how it works

Another X user, Mario Newfal, responded to Musk’s post, explaining what Blindsight is and how it works. He wrote, “Neuralink is prepping to test its first Blindsight implant later this year. A lot of people hear ‘vision restoration’ and assume it's about fixing damaged eyes. That's not the plan. The plan is to send visual information directly to the visual cortex of the brain. Even if the eyes are gone. Even if the optic nerve is gone. That's a very different and very interesting conversation. @neuralink”The company’s website says, “We have received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for Blindsight. This accelerates our path towards helping restore visual perception to those who have lost the ability to see.”Explaining how this brain chip will work, Neuralink added, “During normal vision, the retina at the back of the eye converts light into electrical signals, which the brain processes and interprets to create our perception of the visual world.Various conditions—such as injury or disease affecting the eyes or optic nerves—can disrupt this complex process, resulting in loss of visual function and often total blindness. At Neuralink, we are developing a capability called Blindsight to generate visual perception by activating brain areas responsible for visual function. Bypassing the natural eye-to-brain pathway, Blindsight uses a video camera to capture images of one's surroundings or loved ones, and wirelessly transmits them to the brain via our specialised implant.”
