In the 1970s, American offices wanted to make writing more efficient. So, they asked secretaries to stop typing, and moved that work to newly created pools of skilled typists — people whose job was to sit in a part of the office called a word processing centre and just type all day. But when the personal computer arrived, in the 1980s, typing could happen at any desk. And the typist disappeared.
