Blending both gothic and classical architectural styles, St Thomas Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in Mumbai. Created to improve the morals of Brits living in India (as it was then feared that some may fall to the wayside while living amongst heathens) the project was abandoned when its patron Governor Aungier died.
An enterprising chaplain, Richard Cobbe, took up the project again with vigour in 1714, and the cathedral was finally opened on Christmas Day 1718. Remarkably well preserved, the cathedral appears much the same as it did during colonial times. The walls are lined with memorial tablets for deceased British parishioners.
