The nets work on the concept of a cantilever―a pile of rocks is tied to ropes on one end, while the other side contains the net. A group of men raise or lower the rocks, while one walks on the bamboo pole to balance the weight. This must have been a profitable source of income when the rivers and backwaters were filled with fish, and labour was cheap. Today, the fishes are disappearing, and men ready to work are hard to come by, and the fishing nets are only a tourist attraction. You can try operate the fishing nets by yourself. The men are only too happy to have you share the burden. You can even buy the fish from them, or, if you are a vegetarian, ask them to let the fish back into the water!
Note: The Chinese Fishing Nets are located along the beach. Visit in the daytime for trying out the nets, but for the best view of the nets at sunset, take a boat ride.
