Although a part of the Dal Lake wetlands, it is considered a separate lake in itself because of its size. Nageen is deeper, cleaner than Dal and you will find a number of adventurous people swimming in the lake. If you are planning to swim here, do keep an eye out for shikaras, motor boats and other such distractions.I am often asked by travelers which lake is better for a houseboat stay. I recommend Nageen over Dal as I find Nageen a lot more peaceful and cleaner. The views of Zabarwan range, Shankracharya Hill and Hari Parbat from here are beautiful and I enjoy taking pictures from the houseboat and shikara. Couples prefer shikara ride here over Dal because of its tranquil atmosphere. Birding enthusiasts too have a field day here, especially during winters when a number of migratory birds like waders make this lake their home. The lake is home to a number of resident species too. Keep a look out for the pied kingfishers as they put on an amazing display while fishing.
