As tourists in Bangkok soon find out, bartering is an essential skill for navigating this city. Step into any market and your bargaining skills will immediately be put to the test. That’s why exploring the Bank of Thailand Museum is so worthwhile, visitors get a chance to see Thailand’s history of money from the ground up. For instance, displays here show how Thai people used to trade objects like jewellery in place of official currency in the days before the Sukhothai period; examples of the first bullet coins that emerged later in the Rattanakosin era; and when the beginning of banknotes appeared during the mid-1800s.
Since the Bank of Thailand Museum is not part of the main tourist path, visitors must make an appointment to see it. Only 10 people at a time are permitted to look around this special space. But with this advanced booking comes royal treatment, including a guided tour and additional information. Located within the beautiful Bang Khunphrom Palace, both the building and its surrounding grounds provide a serene environment in which to delve into the history of Thai currency. You’ll undoubtedly leave with a deeper appreciation of the country’s economic journey to where it is today.
