This is a small monastery that is located approx. 2 km away from Padum (biggest town and capital of Zanskar). There is also a sizeable town at the base of the gompa, which is situated on a round piece of land that rises suddenly out of a flat plain.
Visitors can access this monastery quite easily; there is a metalled road that goes all the way to Pipting gompa (also Pipiting, Pibiting). Nearby is a huge stupa that is visible from afar and is a good pointer to the monastery at Pipting. Buddhist gatherings are held here as there is plenty of space nearby. Pipting monastery is also the venue where a Drukpa Rinpoche holds a sermon or function, during which entire villages from far and sundry walk and cross mountain slopes to attend the talk. It is a great time for fanfare in all of Zanskar and resembles a merry festival when villagers are dressed in traditional finery and wear ‘perak’.
