A shining gem of the Shiga prefecture, Nagahama is yet another castle town that is home to some of the best cherry blossom (Sakura) sightings in Japan. With the ruins of the iconic Nagahama Castle, and its sublime Ho-koen Park, there is a lot for you to savour in this 16th Century city. This is especially true for its art galleries and museums that play host to a multitude of talents. Strolling along the city’s Kurokabe (black wall) Square, where antique and souvenir shops are lined up, takes one back in time. Situated right next to the gigantic Lake Biwa, Nagahama also has some alluring temples, and is the venue for exciting festivals like the Nagahama Hikiyama-matsuri with profound theatre performances that document the history and traditions of Japan. Additionally, for nature enthusiasts, Japan’s best Bonsai plum exhibition takes place in this historical town during the months of January to March.
A popular day trip from Kyoto, the Nagahama Station (the oldest train station in all of Japan) is around an hour’s ride from Kyoto Station and you could take the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen towards Maibara followed by the Hokuriku Line, which then takes you to your final destination. Your Japan Rail Pass should cover the cost of your journey, and it is advisable to reserve your seats on the bullet train.
