Noteworthy for: This was once a working-class medieval neighbourhood, and although aristocrats took over in the centuries that followed, it retains a more bohemian feel than other parts of Florence.
A large region south of the river (the name literally means 'across the Arno'), Santo Spirito has more cultural sites than you can possibly squeeze into a single day. As well as the world-renowned Santo Spirito church - a perfect showcase of Renaissance architecture - this neighbourhood boasts the historic Palazzo Pitti, the iconic Ponte Vecchio, the beautiful Giardino di Boboli and the famous Piazzale Michelangelo (with its stunning view of the city), together with the city’s very best art and antique shopping along Via Maggio.

Excellent daily markets and wonderful trattorias make the Oltrarno Florence’s prime spot for gastronomes, while the abundance of artisans' workshops gives the area a touch of contemporary authenticity.
