The largest Franciscan church in Europe, Santa Croce’s red, green and white marble facade and elaborate interiors mean it’s also one of Florence's most striking. Designed by Arnolfo di Cambio in the 13th century, but not fully completed until 1863, it boasts beautiful frescoes by Giotto alongside works by everyone from Donatello to Henry Moore. It’s also the burial place of hugely influential local figures like Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. Read less
