The Inca Trail has been on tourist itineraries for ages. Its popularity means overpriced packages and crowded trails. Enter Huchuy Qosqo aka Little Cusco. There are a number of alternative trails for Machu Picchu, but Huchuy Qosqo offers the easiest route. It is close to the town of Lamay and is easily accessible from Cusco. The trail starts at Tambomachay and ends at Machu Picchu in 3 days. This makes it the perfect weekend getaway. Take your time to explore Huchuy Qosqo, an Incan site, which is off-the-beaten path. Walking around this site and examining its ruins will introduce you to Incan architecture and the Incan way of life. Try to plan this weekend getaway between the months of May and September as those are the driest months of the year. The trek is no fun during wet months as there is a lot of muck around on the tracks during that time of the year. Don’t forget to carry some pills for altitude sickness and lots of snacks along with you.
