At the confluence of three rivers, the Prayag was an ancient seat of learning. During the Mughal rule, Akbar realized the strategic importance of the Prayag and built an important city called Allahabad or Illahabad with a fort at the river confluence. After the 1857 Mutiny, the British transferred the capital of the North-Western Provinces to Allahabad, where it remained for the next twenty years. The city got locational advantage by being situated on the Grand Trunk Road and became an important junction of the East India Railways. At Allahabad was published the Pioneer, one of the more prominent English dailies in India. In the early-1900s, Allahabad was described as a junction of `the great railway system which unites Bengal with Central India and Bombay’, developing into a great centre of inland and export trade.
