5 remarkably preserved ancient cities that were hidden in plain sight
These ancient cities have been hiding secrets of long-lost civilisations that has existed long before we arrived. Once lively with various activities, these places have become beautifully preserved historical time capsules. Each city has its own story to tell, and showcases the architectural ingenuity and cultural richness of the era. Here are five such ancient cities that deserve a mention for sure.
Knossos, Greece
Knossos served as the heart of the Minoan civilisation and was forgotten for centuries until it was rediscovered. A vast palace was revealed in ruins. It had beautiful buildings, courtyards and lively murals. As per the records, its intricate labyrinths are linked to the legend of the Minotaur. Excavations also revealed advanced water supply systems and an extensive trading network.
Jericho, Palestine
Jericho is recognized as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with roots extending over 10,000 years. Hidden beneath layers of history, archaeologists have uncovered ancient walls and towers that reflect a rich cultural and architectural heritage. The city’s defensive structures demonstrate advanced construction techniques for its time. Today, Jericho symbolises resilience, offering a glimpse into early human civilization.
Skara Brae, Scotland
Skara Brae is a prehistoric settlement that has been buried under sand and clay for thousands of years. First discovered after a storm in 1850, this wonderfully preserved settlement provides an insight into the life of Neolithic people. Each residence has its own bed and handicraft display shelf. The layout of the village indicates a close-knit community, which also makes this place one of the best-preserved groups of prehistoric houses in all of Western Europe.
Akrotiri, Greece
Located on the island of Santorini, this place was buried by a volcanic eruption around 1600 BC. Buildings, pottery and well-preserved colourful frescoes can be seen among the ruins. Unlike Pompeii, no human remains were found, which made it possible to successfully evacuate before disaster strikes. Akrotiri's architecture reflects advanced engineering, and features multi-story buildings and a complex drainage system.
Petra, Jordan
Petra also known as the ‘City of Roses,’ was carved out of majestic sandstone cliffs, which was buried beneath the desert sand. Exquisite stone architecture, including a unique treasury was found amazingly intact. It was once a bustling commercial centre connecting east and west, whereas its advanced water system allowed organisms to thrive in the harsh desert environment. Today it stands as one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world.
