6 unhappiest cities in the US; find out why
A city’s character is often defined by the people living there. And various factors, such as low annual income, high crime rates, and unpleasant weather, can significantly affect a city's quality of life. Based on reports, here’s a list of six cities in the US that rank among the unhappiest in the United States. Read on to know more.
New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans is famed for its Mardi Gras celebrations, vibrant culture, and of course, rich history, it’s not without any significant challenges. As per the reports, the rate of violent crime in the city is alarmingly high, whereas the cost of living is 1.6% above the national average. Along with this, the rate of unemployment stands at 11%, whereas the residents also bear the burden of high taxes, making it difficult for many to thrive economically.
Baltimore, Maryland
This place is struggling with overcrowding, with a population density of 7,241 people per square mile. Ongoing economic difficulties, high violent crime rates further add to the growing sense of unease. Although this place has rich cultural significance, it’s plagued by poverty, with residents struggling to face the weight of economic hardships.
Memphis, Tennessee
Memphis is another city battling high crime rates, with violent crime nearly four times the national average. It’s the largest city in Tennessee, but this reason does very little to contribute to the happiness of people. Many residents express disappointment which is often linked to safety concerns and economic instability.
Birmingham, Alabama
Birmingham is another city that finds a mention in this list, which is mostly because of high rate of separation and divorce. In addition to this personal stress, the city also registers a high crime rate, further adding to the unease among its residents.
Cleveland, Ohio
Cleveland faces challenging weather, with frequent cloudy days and rainfall, affecting the mood and overall happiness of the people living there. Then this place also witnesses violent crimes, the rate of which is over three times the average of the US, making it an unsafe place to live. Combined with economic difficulties, Cleveland struggles to provide a happy environment for its residents.
Detroit, Michigan
Detroit also makes it to the list. Once a bustling hub of the automotive industry, it now struggles with crime, poverty, and unemployment. The average annual income is shockingly low, and the city faces high divorce and separation rates, reflecting a broader sense of instability and discontent among its population.
