9 countries that are part of the Amazon Rainforest
The Amazon Rainforest, the largest tropical rainforest in the world, stretches across nine countries in South America – Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname, and French Guiana, an overseas territory of France. Each of these countries offer unique ways to experience this vast and biodiverse ecosystem. From guided tours and eco-lodges to river cruises and wildlife safaris, there are so many ways to experience this natural wonder.
Brazil
Brazil is home to about 60% of the Amazon Rainforest, making it the primary destination for Amazon exploration. The Amazon Basin, accessible from cities like Manaus, serves as a gateway for river cruises, jungle lodges, and guided tours that delve deep into the heart of the rainforest.
Peru
Peru’s section of the Amazon is renowned for its biodiversity, particularly in the regions of Madre de Dios and Loreto. The city of Iquitos, which can only be reached by air or river, is a popular base for Amazon expeditions, including visits to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve.
Colombia
Colombia’s Amazon region, located in the southern part of the country, is centred around the town of Leticia, near the borders with Brazil and Peru. From here, travellers can embark on river journeys and jungle hikes, exploring the diverse wildlife and ecosystems of the Amazon.
Ecuador
Ecuador’s Amazon, known as the Oriente, is one of the most biologically diverse areas of the rainforest. The Yasuni National Park, accessible from the city of Coca, offers a rich variety of wildlife and the opportunity to interact with indigenous communities.
Bolivia
Bolivia offers a quieter and less crowded Amazon experience. The region around Rurrenabaque, including Madidi National Park, is known for its incredible biodiversity and opportunities to see wildlife like jaguars, caimans, and macaws in their natural habitat.
Venezuela
Venezuela’s Amazon region, located in the south, is part of the larger Orinoco River Basin. The region is less developed for tourism, and the country is experiencing political and civil unrest. Keeping the unrest aside, places like Canaima National Park, home to the famous Angel Falls, is a part of Venezuela's Amazon.
Guyana
Guyana’s Amazonian region is an undiscovered gem, offering pristine rainforest experiences. The Iwokrama Rainforest and Kaieteur National Park are highlights, providing opportunities to see rare wildlife and explore untouched jungle landscapes
Suriname
Suriname offers a more off-the-beaten-path Amazon experience. Its interior rainforests, accessed via river expeditions and eco-lodges, are home to diverse wildlife and indigenous cultures, providing an authentic and remote rainforest adventure.
French Guiana
As an overseas territory of France, French Guiana is an intriguing destination for Amazon exploration. The country’s rainforests, which are part of the larger Guiana Shield, offer unique opportunities for wildlife observation and exploration of tropical ecosystems, particularly in areas like the Guiana Amazonian Park, one of the largest national parks in the European Union.
