A look at some of the largest natural arches in world
Our planet is brimming with a number of interesting natural wonders and one of them are natural arches. These ecological formations are created over millions of years because of erosion from the sea or rivers. Today, most of these arches stand as a popular tourist attraction of the place, and visited by travellers and geological researchers.
Read on to learn more about the Earth's largest natural arches.
Fairy Bridge or Xianren Bridge, China
Fairy Bridge, also in China, is also among the world's largest natural arches measuring 400 ft. This wonder of nature is a sight to beyond! It is located about 40 km from Fengshan in Guangxi Province. The outside world was absolutely unaware of this bridge until 2009 thanks to the Natural Arch and Bridge Society (NABS). A geologist spotted the bridge with the help of the internet.
Jiangzhou Immortal Bridge, China
Surprisingly, China is home to most of the famous, largest and oldest natural arches in the world! Jiangzhou Immortal Bridge in Jiangzhou village of Guangxi Province, is one of the prime attractions of Xianren Natural Bridge Tourism Area. It's a unit of the Leye-Fengshan National Geopark.
Landscape Arch, Utah, US
A part of the Devil’s Garden region of Arches National Park, the Landscape Arch is quite old and now nearing the end of its life. The thinnest section of the arch is only 6 ft thick, which could fall at some time (in a century!).
Kolob Arch, USA
You’ll find this natural architecture inside the Zion National Park. It’s really difficult to spot because of its remote location in the park. But the place has been attracting thrill seekers including rangers, hikers and climbers for a long time now.
Aloba Arch, Chad
This arch is counted among the most incredible natural arches in the world! Set in the Ennedi Range of the Sahara Desert in Chad, it’s a large alcove arch. Aloba Arch has a span of 250 ft and is also among the tallest known arches in the world.
Rainbow Bridge, USA
Rainbow Bridge is perhaps the most accessible of the large arches of the world. One can reach here by a 2-hour boat ride on Lake Powell followed by a few hours of trekking. The bridge is noted for its natural beauty and unique shape!
Shipton’s Arch, China
This is the world’s tallest natural arch! Also famous as the Gate of Heaven, the arch’s impressive dimensions, height of 1200 ft and a span of 200 ft, has been attracting visitors from across the globe!
